Jessie Buckley Breaks Toe While Filming Key Scene in ‘The Bride!’ as Production Nears Finish

Jessie Buckley pushed through real pain while filming one of the most important moments in The Bride!, the upcoming monster romance from director Maggie Gyllenhaal. The actress revealed that she broke her toe during a late-night shoot, but still returned to set the next day to finish the scene.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Buckley explained that the injury happened during the final week of filming, when exhaustion was already setting in. She said the scene involved repeated backward falls during a moment with a gun firing, and after doing the move several times, her toe was badly hurt. Despite the injury, filming continued as planned.

Buckley described the injury as severe, saying her toe became extremely swollen, yet she found an unexpected benefit. Because her character in The Bride! is designed to move unevenly, the injury actually added to the look and feel of the role. The actress even joked that it helped her performance rather than stopping it.

The film stars Buckley opposite Christian Bale, who plays Frank, a reimagined version of Frankenstein’s monster. The story follows Frank as he teams up with Dr. Euphronious, played by Annette Bening, to create a new companion from a reanimated body. Unlike earlier versions, this Bride is fully alive, curious, emotional, and deeply connected to Frank.

Set against a 1930s Chicago backdrop, the movie blends romance, chaos, and rebellion. As the two monsters fall in love, their journey takes a darker turn, pulling them into a crime spree that challenges social rules and sparks unrest. The film is inspired by James Whale’s 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein, but takes a bold new direction.

Bale has also spoken openly about the intense filming process. In a separate behind-the-scenes story, he shared that he followed a daily screaming ritual on set to stay mentally focused while playing Frank. That intense dedication reflects the demanding nature of the production.

With filming now complete, The Bride! is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2026. As cast stories continue to emerge, Buckley’s on-set injury highlights just how physically demanding this production truly was—and how far its stars went to bring the story to the screen.
